3rd Cross Gates Guides have had a very busy autumn term starting with a cook out at Temple Newsam Park. This means being able to build and light a fire from dry leaves and twigs. Dishes are kept simple but pears in foil with a melted after eight mint has to be my favourite.
We have had 8 new Guides join us so we decided to start with a fun badge this term. The Guides have been working towards the confectionery badge. This entails making different icings and a variety of sweets with of course lots of melted chocolate. We have also concentrated on the Guides fulfilling their community service to gain a challenge badge every year they are at Guides. On Saturday 19th November 6 Guides set out to do a leaflet drop along Austhorpe Road and the adjoining streets for the Good Neighbourhood Scheme. 255 leaflets and an hour later the Guides completed their task. The leaflet drop was to make people in the area aware of the scheme, recruit volunteers and advertise to the older people in our community. We hope to repeat this again in the New Year. Our involvement also means the Guides have been asked to provide some seasonal entertainment at the Good Neighbours Christmas party. We are fortunate to have many talented musicians and singers so they should get every one in the Chnstmas mood.
The Guides decided they would like to be involved in some fundraising as part of their community service. The Callum Mardy charity was chosen as many of the girls know Callum as a pupil from St. Theresa's school. The fundraising took the form of providing bacon and sausage rolls and refreshments after the 8.30a.m and 10.30a.m masses. There was also a cake stall and tombola. Many of the Guides were involved making posters, getting the tombola ready or manning the stalls on the day. It was a great success and a complete sell out. We had to make 2 extra trips to Tesco to keep the butties going but demand out stripped the supply, so sorry to those who missed out. We raised a total of £311.42. Thank you to all the parishioners who supported this event.
As we come to the end of the term the Guides decided they would like to have a themed Christmas party. It will be "Strictly Come Dancing" with cocktails and ball gowns. I just hope there will be some chocolate desserts.
